YOUTH SCOUT TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

We have several amazing training opportunities coming up for the youth in our troop.  These Council and National level courses are in addition to what we do as a troop and give our Scouts a chance to meet other folks while expanding their leadership abilities.  We encourage your Scout(s) to signup for one or more of these courses this coming year.

JUNIOR LEADERSHIP ORIENTATION WORKSHOP (JLOW)

This program is designed for Scouts who have been in a troop for a year or two.  Many will even take it twice to get all of the content offered.  JLOW is a Friday night and Saturday all-day course.  Friday offering includes the Scout’s choice in either Introduction to Leadership Skills in the Troop (ILST) or Den Chief Training.  ILST follows a National syllabus to provide an overview of how a troop is organized and the responsibilities of leadership positions in the troop.  Saturday, Scouts attend sessions to build skills needed for a young leader to help contribute within their patrol and troop.  Courses range from cold weather camping, to cooking, quartermaster, and more.  There are usually 8-15 classes to choose between.

Cost is typically  $15-$50 depending on options selection.  Registration can be found on the Council Website

NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING (NYLT)

NYLT is a 6-day experience that takes place over a full week or 2 weekends. Each course will instruct participants in advanced leadership skills based on the National BSA Syllabus and the Youth Leadership Training Continuum. NYLT is a combination of classroom and practical “Hands on” exercises. The course is taught by youth-led staff, modeling the best in leadership skills using the teaching E.D.G.E. The course demonstrates vision based team building and conflict resolution skills using a wide variety of fun yet challenging activities.  The course time is followed by a 3-4 month period called a Phase II where Scouts create and execute against goals to make themselves and their unit better.  Those successful in completing the Phase II receive their bolo.

Scouts must be 13 years old, First Class, completed ILST, and have Scoutmaster approval.

The cost is $200 for all who sign up and pay in full by December 31st.  Afterwards, it goes up.  Don’t wait to signup because the courses are filling up fast!  In 2019, the April course sold out in 4 days!

Registration can be found on the Council Website

NATIONAL ADVANCED YOUTH LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE (NAYLE)

NAYLE is an exciting program that enhances leadership skills and expands upon the team-building and ethical decision-making skills learned in National Youth Leadership Training. NAYLE emphasizes leadership, teamwork, and selfless service, using the core elements of NYLT to help youth strengthen these skills. The NAYLE course is now available at all four national high-adventure bases. The material presented is basically the same at all four venues but is specific to the unique environment of each site. NAYLE will equip youth leaders to be better unit leaders, NYLT staff members, and/or superior camp staff members. It will help guide their journey to become true servant leaders, able to develop the members of any team they lead. NAYLE provides life skills for now and the future.

The cost is $425 (not including travel).  Course is offered at Philmont in Cimarron New Mexico or Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia.

Scouts must be 14 but not yet 20 years old, hold a unit leadership position, and have completed NYLT.  Register at:  https://www.scouting.org/programs/boy-scouts/resources/nayle/
